Abstract

One of the most urgent demands that physicians face today is the need for physician leaders who can advocate for changes in healthcare, however, physicians are trained extensively in the approach to patients and patient care, which is applicable and appropriate for that purpose. The challenge is that those highly developed skills and approaches needed to care for patients are not fully interchangeable with those required to be successful physician leaders. The medical education community has an opportunity to maximize the physician skillset by developing their leadership skills in order to inspire healthcare transformation. This panel will include representatives from four COMs who are employing different approaches, from providing leadership development training for faculty and alumni who will then be able to better guide students as they develop as leaders, to developing an elective leadership course, to implementing a resiliency in leadership distinction earned by students over the course of their entire undergraduate medical education.
