Abstract

In this chapter, we explore American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) identity from a cultural and historical perspective, as well as the complexities it creates for the ways in which we support AI/AN physician learners today. We summarize the representation of Al/AN members in the medical workforce from the medical student level through to the practicing physician, including academic faculty members. We also describe several barriers that impede the successful matriculation of AI/AN along the pathway from medical school to clinical practice, including historical trauma, lack of mentorship, and other financial and cultural barriers. Lastly, we work toward developing a shared understanding of the recommended opportunities to enhance Al/AN advancement along the medical education continuum.
